Where to go now, Spiderman?

He did it again. 10 years after his first attempt, French “Spiderman” Alain Robert climbed the Petronas Tower again, without robe and only using his hands and feet. He reached the 58th floor before police coaxed him out of his pursue.

Imagine the wind. Imagine the height. Imagine how it would be like to be up there and see the world so small below you.

This is fantastic - now imagine what kind of feelings, pictures or sounds went through his head while he climbed up. Probably total confidence, absolute trust in his ability and forward looking to the top of the tower.

Surely not - oh God, what do I do up here, careful that I don't fall, this is dangerous.

What you do in your mind and body when you set out to do something is what we in NLP call a positive internal representation (argh, what words!!!). An Internal Representation is about the things inside your head when you go about to do something. The question, always, is, what are you saying to yourself, and what is happening in your body!!

Be it the presentation that you fear or that you anticipate or that cold call that you postpone or just do it due to the fast beating of your heart or the confidence that you have.

Anything you do!!! Really.

n_01spiderman.jpg Now imagine this spiderman and the first few steps that he takes. He is standing at the bottom of the tower, probably looking up. People around him might not notice him, but they will soon. Then Alain sets off and quickly reaches the first floor. What are people on the street going to say? Come down, or hey, man, that is cool!!! What happens to the people inside the office that see him hanging outside? Fear or anticipation or excitement?

Off, off he goes and fast he is. Real fast. And attracts attention.

So, ask yourself, what is going on in your head when you start out doing something? And remember, every time, you do this, and even if you feel uncomfortable the first time around, it stretches your belief system and the neurology!

What we teach in our NLP Certified Practitioner courses intensively, and also in our 2-day introductionary course this weekend is to how to manage your feelings. How to always be in a state that empowers you because it is the fear inside of you that is crippling you.

Just imagine what you can do if you just know ways to overcome this fear and become the magnificent person that you dream of being? You can be it, so very easily, really!!!!!!!, when you just realise your potential!

First impressions count

It is so, so, so very important to make a great, no, let me rephrase this - an outrageously great impression with whatever you do.

Impressions count.

When the customer calls your company, how well prepared are your people to make a good impression? Is the receptionist trained up well enough? Does she or he know how to build rapport over the phone on an instant? What if the receptionist is not around? And someone else picks up the phone, someone, who is not that used to customer contact but happens to be, well, just there? How prepared is this executive?

When the customer buys your product, how well trained are the salespeople? Okay, sure, the normal retailer might not be part of your value chain, and is not on your salary list. But wait a minute!!! What if the salesperson has no clue about your product but happens to know the product of your competitor? Because, just may be, the competitor paid a visit to the shop, and explained the product in one free session? Well, while the customer was looking for your product, the salesperson rather explains your competitor's product, that he knows so well.

How easy is your product to handle? How is the feeling of the product? is it easy to set up, or is it absolutely necessary to read the manual for hours and hours to just get the basics right on the buyer's premises? And, by the way - how well written is the manual? Full of mistakes? Forget about the grammar, that might be fine, because not everybody's first language is English (even so you could hire a proofreader!). But what about the spelling mistakes? Or, are the instructions easy to follow and understandable? Are there pictures leading visually inclined people through the setup?

How willing is your customer service to visit the customer's premises to give a hand with the installation? Has your company prepared them to assist a customer even after office hours? Do you have a hotline?

Oh - and by the way - how prepared are you, outside your office? Do you talk positively about your company? Are you a brand agent? What would a customer think when he meets you, by chance, in the supermarket or the mall?

Be aware that pitfalls for your company are all around. Today you need to serve many different kinds of customers who all look differently at your product. While segmenting your marketplace and your communication is one way to address different needs, in the time of the Internet, you also want to develop approaches for a 1 to 1 marketing. And, just to make sure - address customers in the way they want to be addressed. Not in the way that is convenient for you.

Types of people

There are only three types of people. Seriously.

Those that are interested in meeting others to just widen their horizon and to grab the chance to learn something new - in any situation. They are the ones that search for value in any encounter, and question their beliefs. At least, when I meet them and they really are not interested in what I am saying, they say so. Honestly. Even in Asia, where sometimes, vague commitments or concessions are the rule.

Those that might say 'yeah, let's meet' but then never show the interest in following through. They don't respond to emails, calls or text messages. Their secretary or personal assistant excuses them - ' he went out for lunch', 'for an appointment' or, the favourite, is in a meeting. I love those. Sometimes, I ask how long the meeting will last and call again, on the dot. Embarrassment is audible, hehe!! The worse case are those that set up an appointment but then don't show up. Call 5 minutes before the meeting actually starts.

The third group are the fence sitters that never get anything done. They are interested, they meet, they talk, but then, cannot decide. Favourite saying? 'We call you when we are ready', 'we call you in a couple of days/ weeks', or, the favourite 'can you call again in 3 weeks time?', often hoping, that I won't call. There was a time, when I wrote down when to call and called, exactly after 3 weeks, or 2 days. Nowadays, I hardly care.

I prefer to work with the first group. They are ready for change, see value and want to accelerate. The other groups will come around, sooner or later. But it is like change everywhere, and willing to move - sometimes it is too late, and the train or the opportunity has gone - passed!!

Malaysia's getting obese - government plans fastfood ad ban

The numbers scream at you - the rate of obesity in Malaysia increased from around 20% to 40% in just one decade. A huge jumb, if the numbers can be trusted (hm - I still see so many slim Malaysians, how?).

The great part in Malaysia is that the food is really, really, one of the best in the world. Heck, I miss the rice (nasi) and curry, when I am in Germany. The beauty of the food is that often, different types of dishes are mixed. Like, German food Malaysianised. Get the picture?
I would actually say that if there is one major trait that combines all Malaysia, it is the food culture.

Now, the government is planning to ban ads advertising fastfood, or impose a sin tax on fast food. Now, how do you define fast food, is my first question?
Then, what about other food that is also contributing to obesity, such as Teh Tarik, or Nasi Lemak? (these are Malaysian drinks and Malaysian dishes).

Isn't it the culture that supports the food intake? Look at any of the Malaysian festivals, such as Hari Raya or Chinese New Year? House-to-house visits are common and encouraged - and what happens then is that visitors are offered food. It is not necessarily polite to say no to the offer.
I don't believe an ad ban will work.

In fact I believe it is a case of misplace responsibility. Look - isn't it the responsibility of the individual to take care of their food intake? Execise regularly? Eat vegetables and do something that contributes to healthy lifesyle?

What do you think? Do you think you live health-conscious? Do you see it as your responsibility or do you think it is the government, who has to take care of this?

In the end, it all boils down, as well, how you do what you do in your mind, really. And we teach you this in the NLP Practitioner course that is coming soon again. Read up on it in the brochure, okay and sign up for the courses now?

Preparing training modules and thinking about leadership

This is serious fun.

Yesterday, I drafted the rough outline of my "The Secret of Excellence in Leadership" Training workshop. It will be the first workshop in Malaysia that combines Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP with the ingredients of leadership.

Of course, a lot of work went into it already, through reading of various books and really getting deep down into the material - creating the knowledge, so to speak.

Now, I am sitting here, in my study at home, still flipping through various book (many, many books!!). Picking a line here, and there, and putting it into the presentation.

This is serious fun, because, well, I can build in the jokes, and the serious material.

The exercises, the worksheets, the material that will go into the manual.

Serious fun, and that is what it is al about.

I am reading a lot of books on leadership. Be it John Maxwell, or Kouzes and Posner or Steven Covey, or Jack Welsh and Donald Trump or the work and studies from management consulting firms, such as Hewitt Associates, my former "home".

I learn, and also realise that leadership is different - whoever describes it.

Well, this is nothing really new - but nevertheless an interesting fact. I imagine, in my mind, the CEO of an organisation, or the aspiring executive who wants to be a leader one day. They might be totally different in their thinking and behaving, in the values and beliefs, from a Donald Trump or a Jack Welsh, or a Ghosn, for that matter.

They slender through the bookshops, and pick up those books. May be they buy it, may be not. Whatever. But what if they do it, and they "try" (is there ever a try?) to implement it in their organisation or respective department.

Enthusiastically, they start the journey, but will they succeed? I am not so sure, honestly. These books are good, the studies are well done, but we are all different, are we not? And more of it - our organisations are different, our employees with whom we cooperate are different.

What really will happen if you come back and implement a management style a la Donald Trump or Jack Welsh. Can you imagine that? What do you think?

The little people in Penang

The employees knew that something was coming, because a while ago, an earlier batch of employees was retrenched by the company (identity hidden) already. So there were rumours that more people would be retrenched or outsourced, but nobody knew exaclty, who would be affected and when it was their turn to leave.

Then management came and called the employees into a meeting room. The employees were simply told that their job was no more. The employees were asked to clean their tables, given a plastic bag, to put their private stuff in and then come back to the room for further details. Time given to do the clean-up - 30 minutes.

Suddenly they were out, in the cold. After so many years of working for the same company, they lost their job. 25 years, 20 years or even "only" 7 years or 5 years.

Losing the job that they thought was theirs for life.

Their colleagues only realised what has happened when they wondered why their colleagues didn't come back. The employees, now retrenched, were told that there were coaches that would help them to draft their resume.

Things that happen in Penang and this is were I came in.

I was in Penang for two days and had to coach a couple of those employees on how to get started in the job market. I wasn't alone as there were at least 5 of us, hired for the job by a company specialised in getting people back onto the feet and into the job market or become entrepreneurs. It is a great effort and a great company - when I lost my job a longer while ago, they also helped me. This outplacement company was hired by the retrenching company to perform the job and help the employees for a couple of weeks.

A look into the eyes of the participants revealed their desparation. Their heads down, voice low, no hope anywhere in their system. They had never written any resume, some of them never had any other job. The road ahead looked pitch dark. How to find a job, when you are over 50, and worked 25 years in the same company?

I started my work and realised quickly, that all that I wanted to say and had prepared didn't make any sense to those guys. Way too high level, way ahead of their educational background. These were the "little people", those that are often steamrolled by the economic train when things turn the wrong way.

I had to change things, on the spot. Had to talk their language, which was tougher than I thought. I saw that manytimes, I did not make sense, so I had to revamp my message. I was learning. But here I was, a Mat Salleh, trying to teach the participants on how to find out, now, what they were good at in their job. It was not difficult and took a long time. But we linked up and connected, and they started to laugh, and participated. Still, after a while, they got silent again. Sad eyes, the twitch at their mouth back again.

And we got there, in the end. It felt so good to see the first draft of resumes.

We also talked about communication, and what to do in an interview. We conducted mock interviews. This was hard for some. They were stumpling and it was easy to see how nervous and uncertain they were. One of them, the oldest, nearly started to cry.

The team had organised that some executives from a recruitment agency would come by. Two young executives and here they were. Fast in their actions, and direct in their questions. "Prepare your resume and send it to us." So easy to say, but no understanding of my guys!! Lucky these guys were somewhat ready then already.

I am back now, and hope that I made an impact.

I am waiting for their resumes to check and correct it.

I had a reality check, these last few days and that was a major learning for me.

Asia Mind Dynamics - New Courses Are Starting

I can get back to my old saying - are you serious about change?

And, if you want to change, why not learn to use the planet's most advanced technology on human communication, called NLP or neuro linguistic programming.

Hey - we all "do" NLP every day - day in and day out, in our "normal life"? We communicate, don't we not? We talk to others, we have great conversations and sometimes bad ones. We are leading teams, sometimes perfectly and hamoniously, sometimes lesser so. We have great sales situations and sometimes, we simply don't get on with the buyer (or may be even us?) and don't sell.

Hmmm!!!

Want to know how it works? The processes behind what is going on in your mind and how to improve the processes? Well, it is so easy, so extremely easy to accelerate in whatever you do. Because, all you need to do is to change the way you are thinking, or better, the way, how you represent information inside of you. Hey - I am not talking positive thinking here, but the style how you operate.

What is your thinking, your feeling, for example, when you go into a sales situation? Do you think, "Gee, I don't want to mess up this sale, like I did last time!" or do you think "finally, this is the sale that I am waiting for, and I am going to get it."

If you are aligned in your thoughts, visuals, inner self-talk and feelings, and assume a physiology of excellence, then you will succeed. Easily, and effortlessly!!!

Want to know how?

Congratulations to all graduates of the Certified NLP Practitioner Course of Asia Mind Dynamics

Last Sunday was the day of Asia Mind Dynamics and the participants that came out of my NLP Certified Practitioner Course. 8 days, four weekends, and we got closer to each other, through offsite meetings, onside discussions and exercises.

We all were stretched, in breaking our habits, learning new patterns and understanding of how to run our brain and, ultimately, our life.

No more excuses for having a lack of energy, lacking motivation or coming late. Guys, you are AT CAUSE for your life.

We started the 8 days by stating, that this will be the best training that the participants ever had - and we achieved it!!!!!

They were ready for change, because .... they were there. This contrasted many that said, yeah, I have to change, I will come, and I want to take control of my life.

These guys were there, and they succeeded - brilliantly!

It was exhilarating for the participants. Last Sunday was their day - they had their "examinations", or demonstration. This happened by showing their skills in exercises to the trainer - me :)

They performed magnificently, all of them.

Congratulations to Michael C., Michael H., Nora H., Najwa D, Jasmine R., and Margaret T. I am proud of you!

I was very surprised to received a present as well - a pointer. Great - because well, you know why :)

A race of my own

I am working on my own, currently, or, if you want, with my wife, who is a certified hypnotherapist.

Then, I have a couple of friends with whom I also plan to conduct trainings with, such as the one last week. We also submitted a proposal to a very big organisation in Malaysia and were shortlisted - which is one great success story.

What I want to say, however, is that now, since I have my own business, things are really great and crazy, in all ways possible.

Many, many things to do, from organising tax payments, marketing, tracking of leads, developing material, meeting people, writing proposals, creating templates for letters, invoices and similar. I shouldn't forget blogging, of course. There is much, much more, but boy, this is a 8 days a week job.

Fun so and I wanted it that way, right?

The major difference is that I am stirring the wheel - so I can browse the web when I want, or call, when I want.

How does it feel? Well, last week, I started to think of it as Monopoly Game. You know the game, right? Well, I loved to play the game when I was way, way younger, about 200 or 300 years back. I loved to win, and in fact, I might say that the game developed my competitive streak in me. It was nice to win, and to own the places that I wanted.

Of course, this is different now, since I am dealing with real time events and people or organisations. As mentioned earlier, this is a beautiful business, with beauty shown when people and organisations tranform magnificently. This feels like I have bought a hotel in Monopoly, and someone just steps onto the place.

It simply feels great, to see something, that is called Asia Mind Dynamics grow. And still, there is so much to do. I keep you posted.

It is so great when friends become really, really successful. so successful that they turn up in the newspaper, in fact.

I met Emma James during my training in Sydney in October last year. She is a World Champion Powerlifter, a title that she hold for numerous years. Hey, we had fun, talking, exchanging ideas, studying and training together.

Once we both succeeded in our training, we went out, together with the whole gang that was there with us, to celebrate.

Here are the results of this outing:

It is fun to carry a world champion, hehe. So here is another one, also showing her humour.

Evan, Emma and I.jpg(Evan, Emma and me)
But it doesn't last long, because, well, she really is strong!!!
Emma and I.jpg

(Emma carrying me!!!)She nowadays trains athletes, and shares her knowledge with others in her NLP Training classes in the UK.

A fun lady, but very, very dedicated to the success of those that she works with. I am hoping that she is, one day, visiting me in Malaysia, so that she can share her knowledge with Malaysian athletes as well. Because, hey, NLP is great for use in sport as well - anybody out there reading this from the sports world in Malaysia?

By chance, I found the article copied below - all the best Emma - I am going to send you the link to this entry!

"World Champion Teaches her Secrets

World Champion Athlete and NLP Trainer reveals her secrets to the World!

[ClickPress, Sat Jan 13 2007] World Champion Powerlifter, Emma James, is beginning a new course to teach other athletes, managers and coaches the secrets of her success.

As an NLP (neuro linguistic programmer) Trainer, she applied many of the techniques she learnt as a successful therapist to her own training and not only took World Titles but also world records. Now, after successes with her own performance and those of her clients she has applied the pure sports application to the normal NLP Practitioner course and is about to launch this to the world.

“I am completely happy now with the results these techniques have produced for individuals and teams and am ready to incorporate it into a course. Managers and coaches that have used these techniques as well have had true success and I hold enough World Records now not to worry about my competition learning my techniques!” Emma said.

The first of the NLP Sports Practitioner courses are to be held in Dubai in February and then the premier UK course in May. For further information about Emma James see www.stimulus.webeden.co.uk also email her for coaching or competing advice."

NLP Training - After the training is completed

Ah - there is a time when any training is completed. And then most of the time, reality (whatever that is) sets in. While the beauty of NLP is that it really helps people to change - change on the conscious and unconscious level with greater understanding for self and others - people around the participants haven't changed.

Sadly, many training outcomes are set in a way that they are not very effective - okay, something always sticks with the participants, but often, the learning is quickly forgotten. This happens for a variety of reasons.

One is that the transition back into the normal life is not smoothened. This is difficult in a personal development training, but also in a corporate setting. Coming Monday morning, many participants come back to work, see that the e-mail inbox is full and then, decide to postpone the implementation of the new learning for a day or two.

However, in most cases, the learning is forgotten when not applied immediately. I read a number that 85% of the training effect is lost in such cases. I am not sure if there are numbers for those that participate on their own without corporate sponsorship.

Another reason is that trainings are often conducted to change behaviours. But to change behaviours is not that easy, if the unconscious mind is not integrated. Only if learning is integrated on the conscious and unconsious mind is learning long lasting (something that you get when you train with Asia Mind Dynamics!).

People around those that participated in an NLP training realise that participants coming from NLP courses have changed dramatically. Mostly, participants discover new choices, or develop new pathways in their life. Many participants change their jobs for the better, develop better relationships with loved ones and those around them, gain the promotion that they desired, have a clear picture of the future and more.

But not all and sometimes, it simply is tough to retain the path of change. As much as those participants want to be at Cause for their life and create the results in their life that they desire, the reality can be grinding. An NLP course gives you plenty of tools to operate in a "normal world" (may be it is the crazy world) .

What then can be done?

Well, there are a couple of great, great advantages to go with Asia Mind Dynamics. I will organise regular meetings with all those that participated in the training, there will be online discussion groups, and we will be able to exchange ideas via e-mail, chat boxes or even mobile phones.

If a refresher is needed, I will organise one - for either the individual or the group. Over time, there will be a monthly meeting with those that went through my training, to support each other and learn from each other.

Basically, it is about learning together on how to apply what has been learnt to the real life, to change your life and influence those around you positively. Because, we want to create a world that is worthwhile living in and contributing, right?/

So get the insight now - here is the outline of the brochure and then sign up!

Stress and Christmas shopping

Malaysia is on sale, once again. And sure enough, it coincidences with Christmas. The queues in front of the shopping malls are huge, and disoriented shoppers walk dazily around, eyes wide open.

Many appear stressed, and now before the final, final weekend before Christmas, expect chaos. I will be one who is going to buy some presents for my boy on Saturday. He wants some Play Station Games (Star Wars), a new football, and a bicycle.

I am already not the nicest shopper during normal shopping days but now, with Christmas music blaring, promoters hassling, too many people pushing and shoving, wow, can I not feel pity with myself? I call it sensory overload, and that it surely is. You are entrenched in noise, visual teasers, and just the enclosures with too many people close by.

Well, it is the end-goal that I keep in mind. My boy's smile on the face, when he opens the presents. Of course he now knows that Santa Claus is actually is Papa, so there is no surprise on that side anymore.

A healthy mental attitude is healthy to start with - I play it out in the back of my mind, what I want, where I want it and then, be very determined in what I really want, in order not to be distracted too often.

I attempt to be in the mall at the earliest, to avoid being trapped in one of the huge traffic jams. And then, I entice myself as well with a short visit to the residential bookshop or a coffee. As an additional incentive.

Will I stay cool? Well, I hope and believe I am not heating up inside. I will be doing fine :).

How are you coping with the stress during Christmas shopping?

The lost customer - will they ever return?

Recently, I went for lunch to Madam Kwan in KLCC. Madam Kwan, as most of you know, is one Malaysian restaurant with great, great food. The problem (is it one?) with such great places is that they are packed over lunch time. So, if you don't book a place, well, you better have time to wait.

I had a booking for me and friends, but I was there a bit too early. So I could watch the crowd gathering outside. Some were pretty tense, because they couldn't really see their bookings in the book, others were more astonished about the number of people already waiting. A third group was waiting patiently and silently.

The waiter attending to the waiting guests tried hard, but trying is not good enough for some. Especially, since the poor guy had to leave the door and check with his colleagues in the back about tables, I assume, and then come back to the front.

In the time that he was gone, no one was there to attend to the waiting guests - and more came. So there was room for impatience.

Some guests waiting went away, saying, that it takes too long and that they go over to Little Penang, another restaurant. Clearly, there are also queues in front of Little Penang, but I am not focussing on this right now.

The question here is, of course - will those customers ever return? How will they talk about their waiting experience to friends, neighbours, other colleagues? Such events are lasting events for some, while others browse over it easily.

However, every lost customer is lost business - a business that might not return, anymore!

So what can be done? Better management of the waiting list, for sure. Don't let the guests alone - always have someone to entertain them, or be ready to entertain them.

The guy attending to the customers looked stressed, and it was a stressful environment. So give him something that motivates him, immediately, and on the spot - ha, of course I talk about the magic of NLP here :)

Also, understand the individuality of customers. Every customer is different and wants to be treated differently. So train your people to be able to identify the different characteristics of customers, and treat customers the way they want to be treated. Rapport building, for one, is one great way in doing this, subconsciously!

Again, I am promoting my training here, of course, and again, this is something that we are going to talk about in intensity during the training. How to identify the different types of customers and be able to serve them in the way that entertains them most appropriately, so that, in the end, the level of complaints get reduced and you get a reputation even better than the current one. Which, in turn, increases sales. Great, what?

Eye patterns, customer orientation and decision making strategies

This now is a bit of an advanced NLP topic, but I am in the mood to write about it.

I believe that all of us have realised that when we look at people, they move their eyes, in all directions. It might look like it is a wild goose chase going on, but hey, when people move their eyes, they are actually doing something inside their head.

Now this has been a bit of a contentious topic over the years, with some groups saying that it is nonsense, and others, that it is a workable "technique". I think that if it works for you, it is fine, and if some believe it doesn't work, well, they will come around, sooner or later, okay?

Because, fact is, we all move our eyes.

Talk to people, ask them questions, and look at them, how they move their eyes - and you will see that they do!
Now, basically, there are six quadrants as you can see in the chart.

Vc - which stands for Visual Construct - people construct pictures in their head that they haven't seen before
Vr - which stands for Visual Recall or Remember - people access pictures from their memory,

Ac - which stands for Auditory Construct - people construct sounds, that they haven't heard before
Ar - which stands for Auditory Recall or Remember - people access sounds from their memory,
K - which stands for Kinesthetic - people access their feelings
Ad - which stands for Auditory digital or self-talk - people access information.

Now, listen - in many NLP books it is written that this is how you access your own different quadrants, but hey - I am teaching you that this is how it is when you are looking at the other person.

Why?

Because people access or construct information inside their head and it goes very, very fast. What they are doing is formulating their way of action - how do they do what they do. You want to know what is going on inside their head, not inside your own head, for that matter.

Complicated?

Not really.

You can use the information, on which quadrant people access to identify how they motivate themselves, how they make decision, and how they reassure themselves that they have made the right choice.

Wow, that is great, because, well, you now can look people into the eyes, and know what they want, how they want it and how they are assured of what they got.

Imagine, you can use this to build rapport with people, and serve them better. Because instead of being the pushy salesperson, who is coming from the wrong end of town, you simply know how to sell according to how people want their stuff. What customer orientation is that? What great sales strategy!

Just by looking into their eyes.

Now, wasn't there a movie, where oen actor was saying - "look into my eyes, baby"? Gives a whole new meaning.

These eye patterns elicitation is something I am going to teach in the NLP Certified Practitioner Course in January/ February 2007. I will provide much more detail, and we have a couple of great exercises around it, so that you are able to really use it in your day to day life. So why don't you join me?
