Limits to the brain - cut off at 4!!

For a long time, we were thinking that we could juggle plenty of things at the same time. It is called multitasking. And a long time back, I wrote that the limits to the conscious mind is that it can only hold between 5-9 pieces of information at any one time. The number gravitates to the higher side on a good day and to the lower side on a bad day.

It is something I always stress in my NLP trainings. Together with the fact that multitasking is bad for the economy (and you!!). This is the reason why we cluster and associate information. Seven categories in my To-Do List are more manageable than 25 different categories.

Now, research limits the ability some more. "Scientists think the true capacity is lower when people are not allowed to use tricks like repeating items over and over or grouping items together. ""For example, when we present phone numbers, we present them in groups of three and four, which helps us to remember the list," said University of Missouri-Columbia psychologist Nelson Cowan, who co-led the study with colleagues Jeff Rouder and Richard Morey. "That inflates the estimate. We believe we're approaching the estimate that you get when you cannot group. There is some controversy over what the real limit is, but more and more I've found people are accepting this kind of limit."

Cool, isn't it? It is so wonderfully nice to see how scientific research puts more and more into the real realm of experience what NLP has always discussed.

Persuasion can be done - one person at a time

Seth Godin has an entry on persuasion and it is a good one.

The main point of his entry is that persuasion is not a thing" that can be mass produced. We are all different, and we all run different patterns. Different patterns that are based on our own, unique, individual way of how we experience the world around us. On our own values, beliefs, and attitudes.

NLP says that the Map is NOT the Territory. In order to understand each other, we need to explore the standpoint of the other person. Otherwise, it is communication on a one way street.

So far, I agree.

However, I also believe that there are basic patterns running in groups. Basic belief patterns, that then are expressed linguistically and in behaviours as well.

These are the default patterns. If I talk to a group of senior salespeople, who are in the field for 20, 30 years or longer, they will be sceptical. Why shall they believe me, the Ang Moh? Who is from Europe, and talks about this strange thing called mind?

Or when I talk to women - how can a man understand their issues?
Or see different patterns, mental maps and behaviours in different professional groups - what about Marketers, versus Lawyers? One is (hopefully) more future driven and probably more general, while the other one is more detail oriented and specific (hopefully) looking out for problems on the horizon and how to avoid them.

This means that in order to make myself understood, I need to speak their language. I need to understand how they make sense of the world. Otherwise, it is like I am speaking from Planet Pluto (okay, no planet anymore) to Planet Mars.

So yes, we are all different individually, but our experience impresses certain behaviours and language patterns onto us. And understanding this allows me to influence those whose language I normally don't speak.

Happy Valentine's Day to all lovers and wanna-be lovers

To be in love is one great feeling. The heart is pumping, the moment you think of your lover, and you are simply happy. Nothing can bother you. You sing songs loud, and may be wrong, just because it makes you feel so good.

Every single second away makes your heart ache, and you cannot wait for the phone to ring, and the voice to hear. Even the most stupiest comment makes you smile, and all is well.

Research has even found that to be in a loving relationship is good for your heart! "It may be that people who are married or in close, healthy relationships have lower levels of anxiety, are less likely to smoke, are more physically active and are more likely to have a well-developed social structure. On the contrary, it is known that loneliness kills, and that many times, people lose their sense of purpose when a loved one is gone.

Love is a great feeling, and actually the most powerful feeling of all. Just, for a moment, think of a time you, who reads this, felt really loved. May be it was the hug of the person, or the sight of him or her or the voice that just blew you away.

Most likely, all three came together, when you are close to your lover - the touch, the sound and the sight. In NLP, we call this the VAK or the main representational system. All of us have our own preferred sytem, the one channel, we like to address most. Some of us are more visual than others, and some are more feelings driven. When you are in love, all channels are open, and receptive to this great energy called "love."

Jelapang toll plaza, behaviours and change

I came back from a short trip to Perlis. My mind was in a curious state of mind, since just last week, there was another accident on the infamous Jelapang Toll Plaza station.

"The Jelapang toll plaza has seen 142 accidents in 10 years with the latest on Dec 11 when eight people died and 14 were injured when the bus they were travelling in rammed into the back of a tanker." (NST)

I wondered, what could go wrong at such toll station. I woke up from a dream. Because, it surely is not the plaza that causes the accident. In fact, I haven't seen any toll station hitting out at drivers to make them have an accident.

Who is driving the car or the bus? Drivers are sitting behind the wheel - and boy, they drive fast. I am usually driving very careful, mostly around the speed limit. Which, to remind you (haha), is 110 KM/hour in Malaysia. And what happened was amazing - amazing in a negative sense of the word. Plenty of buses overtook me. That's right. And hey, they didn't crawl by my car so that I would have a good look inside their interior. Nope - they went fast. And when I say fast, I mean real fast. Chasing each other, at least sometimes. Around curves, and while the bus was leaning to the side, I imagined the bus driver hanging on to the wheel, pulling it down to beat gravity. I wondered how the passengers inside felt.

It is the behaviour of the driver that causes accidents. May be they believe to be Michael Schumacher, or they just want to act cool. May be their company is chasing them to speed up for delivery or additional tours. May be, may be, may be. To me, and I am sorry, these are excuses. Sometimes, I hear or read, that yes, the brakes didn't work. Hey - how come such car is on the road? Watching some of the lorries overtaking, even in normal traffic during rush hours, how close they come to other cars in front of them. Scarily close. If then something happens, they have no chance whatsoever, to stop the bus or the truck. It takes a damn long time for such tonnage to slow down. It is the drivers' behaviour, because ultimately, I believe in choice. They chose to speed, or to expose themselves to such jobs or behaviour or company or whatever. Would I punish them? It is not up to me to decide, and I don't believe in punishment, and rather prefer education.

Have you ever asked yourself what a driver feels after reading about a major accident? Or, to be even more drastic. Just watch and observe the reaction of "normal" drivers after they have passed one of the many accident sites. You know, one of these accidents, when everybody slows down and watches. Thinking, that lucky me, this was not me. And then, just after the crawl aside of the side, to step on the accelerator and speed off, chasing another dream.

So when the toll road has been removed, sometimes in 2008, there will be one excuse less for accidents. Will they stop? I wish, but then, do I believe in Santa Claus?

Does the language used in a merger define the future of a company? From Synergy Drive to Sime Darby

A lot is being said about the success of the merger of Sime Darby Bhd, Kumpulan Guthrie Bhd and Golden Hope Plantations Bhd to become one of the world's leading leading plantation group with a landbase of 543,000 ha that originally was named Synergy Drive.

The merged entity, now renamed Sime Darby, today made a has made a stunning debut on Bursa Malaysia with its shares surging by 25.8 per cent.

Everbody talks positively about the entity, and all seems to be well.

Allow me to look a little bit behind the scenes and analyse the language that has been used and how it might or might not indicate the potential for the company. Not all of what is given below are direct quotes, but I hope that the sources used quoted correctly without using their own words too often.




First, the company has been renamed to Sime Darby, its old name that was in use before the merger and the name Synergy Drive. The reason given by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Ahmad Zubir Murshid was that a consultant recommended the name Sime Darby after conducting a survey and Datuk believes that "the existing Sime Darby name carried a fair value in terms of market brand." (NST, November 29, 2007).

The Star quoted Datuk as well, saying that "the new Sime Darby, which will re-list tomorrow, strongly reflected the long-standing brand and equity market values as a conglomerate with multiple core businesses locally and internationally." (The Star Malaysia)

He also stresses that "said the company is effectively bringing together more than 400 years of plantation know-how." (Business Times, November 20, 2007). In the same paper, Datuk stated that "Together, we will combine our knowledge to benchmark the best sustainable practices across all our plantations."

He also talks about "balance cycle of the core business", "integration of plantations", "cost efficiency".

There is nothing wrong or right about the language patterns. They show, to me as LAB Profile Trainer used to look behind the language that people use to detect their behaviour, that it is not the language of change, revolution, major initiatives and so on.

This is okay, because too many mergers created chaos and overpromised. As such, caution and a more defensive language is suitable.

However, accepting the fact that language is an expression of what we think and knowing that top management sets the course and culture of an organisation combined with the scope of challenges faced by Sime Darby - e.g.; globalisation, competition, merger integration), I surely hope that the team behind the merger and in the seats of the company is more proactive.

Why is that? This is because the current language used in above examples shows more a conservative style, think and wait approach style, problem oriented and not necessarily a future driven and goal oriented "let's do it" approach.
